Specifically this template takes the background parameter from {{Infobox musical artist}} or {{Navbox musical artist}} and returns either fn (for individuals) or fn org (for groups), thus:

solo_singer = fn
non_vocal_instrumentalist = fn
non_performing_personnel = fn
group_or_band = fn org
cover_band = fn org
classical_ensemble = fn org
temporary = fn org
